It is desired to be able to predict the behaviour of the PLL in terms of stability and locking to specified frequencies. Control theory can give us this behaviour of a system once we model it in the frequency domain. The goal of the PLL is to lock to a reference frequency fref within a certain amount of time and with minimum interference to adjacent frequencies . The PLL system components are comprised of a phase detector , loop filter , and voltage controlled oscillator . By varying the gains of these system components, the behaviour of the PLL will change. This document will outline the method in which one can design the system components for a desired PLL response.
