In the initial construction period of the system, the majOr communication medium is ultrashort wave, for the data acquisition system, one or multiple relay stations nee ded to be constructed for communication, resulting in high operation and maintenance cost. Along with quick development of mo bile communication technology and the popularization of GSM, especially GPRS communication, the technology of automatic hydrologic data acquisition system is improved greatly. Taking the automatic hydrologic data acquisition system for middle and small rivers in Liaoning Province as example, this paper introduces the composition, communication mode, technological advan tages and main functions etc. of the system. The practice shows that utilizing GPRS as the communication medium of automatic hydrologic data acquisition system has good development prospects.
